Public Relations Manager - Fairfax, VA

Purpose of the Job

Reporting directly to the Communications Director and the Executive Director, the Public Relations Manager contributes to and often leads the development and implementation of strategic public relations programs to enhance and protect the reputation of the Coptic Orphans brand and supports / highlights the mission and vision of the organization. The incumbent works across the full range of public relations activities relating to a variety of areas including researching issues, helping with media events, monitoring media, drafting press releases and media statements, drafting proactive media pitches, talking points / speeches, preparing for high level meetings in Washington D.C. and around the country, creating proposals and helping to fulfill incoming media requests for experts, and serving as a contact for select media outlets. The Public Relations Manager works closely with Communications Director and the Coptic Orphans Senior Team to gather the most compelling Coptic Orphans stories and disseminates them via print publications, social media and the mainstream media. The incumbent also works with Coptic Orphans offices in Canada, Australia, UK and potentially other country offices to develop products that support those countries' public relations strategies.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop press releases, media advisories, written content for newsroom and blogs, executive bios, newsletters, talking points, organizational messaging, preparing speeches for launch events, content for Coptic Orphans internal and external communications.
  • Distribute media advisories and content/press releases through news wire distribution, and through direct reporter pitching.
  • Create a public relations plan for Coptic Orphans and work with press and existing/new contacts to implement.
  • Research media coverage, trending topics relevant to Coptic Orphans and its work, and keep apprised of ongoing conversations in the media. 
  • Develop list of 'influencers' / possible partners and/or ambassadors who may be interested in promoting the work of organization.
  • Work with Senior Team to develop fresh innovative story ideas.
  • Conduct extensive media outreach daily and investigate opportunities for high level meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, the White House, Politicians and Dignitaries, Innovators, and World Leaders.
  • Coordinate the scheduling and logistics for interviews with Coptic Orphans Executive Director.
  • Draft remarks and talking points for the Coptic Orphans Executive Director (in close coordination with the Communications Director).
  • Manage confidential information and content, particularly as it relates to sensitive issues in Egypt and among the Coptic Diaspora.
  • Keep the public apprised of Coptic Orphans' position and answers to frequently asked questions with key stakeholders
  • Develop communications campaigns and talking points to promote Coptic Orphans programs and reach.
  • Help maximize media opportunities and initiate and facilitate media outreach.
  • Screen and facilitate incoming, reactive media interview requests, prepare talking points, and schedule interviews.
  • Develop targeted media lists for news releases, media alerts and other story pitching.
  • Prepare and train staff and warriors for media interviews.
  • Report weekly on pitching efforts, news wire distributions, content creation, campaigns and successful outcomes from media outreach/campaigns.
  • Use social media to promote success stories, special events, interviews etc. and pitch and interact with reporters
  • Produce live video streams and conduct live interviews during events for social media.
  • Assist Coptic Orphans teams with PR activities as necessary for special events, fundraisers and key initiatives.

Minimum Required Education, Knowledge and Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, media relations, or journalism required.
  • Must possess a professional presence and demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Must possess exceptional written, editing, and grammar skills as well experience with on-camera interviews.
  • Excellent organizational skills needed and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects, thrive under pressure and produce high quality deliverables.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strategic and critical thinking skills required.
  • High energy level, self-starter and willing to take initiative with little guidance.
  • Resourceful, dependable, and efficient.
  • Must be comfortable working on short deadlines.
  • Ability to provide high level of service to the Executive Director.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and provide support to program teammates.
  • Comfortable communicating with leadership in a professional manner in high level meetings.
  • Must be able to travel to special events and work after business hours for special events.
  • Mission driven, guided by core values, and a pleasure to work with.
  • Knowledge and Experience with issues affecting Christians in Egypt and the Middle East a huge plus.

Extent of Public Contact (within and outside the organization)

  • Extensive public contact with the Media, external stakeholders, volunteers, donors, etc. as well as ongoing contact with Coptic Orphans Headquarters and country offices.
